EMDR Therapy...

What is EMDR?

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables children, adolescents and adults to recover from psychological trauma.  Typically, individuals deal with traumatic situations naturally, but when an event or a series of events are too intense, the mind’s ability to heal may be compromised; becoming stuck and unable to process the experience.

EMDR is a remarkable treatment that helps people to achieve relief from emotional stress; transforming negative thoughts and feelings into something far more tolerable, and people are not required to talk or focus on troubling memories in great detail in order for things to get better.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is often defined as an event or an accumulation of events which creates so much stress that it overwhelms a person’s sense of safety.  When we talk about trauma we tend to think of:

  • abuse
  • natural disasters
  • violent attacks
  • combat

However, there are many more stressful life events that can also trigger a traumatic reaction in some individuals, for example:

  • the end of a significant relationship
  • a humiliating event
  • bullying
  • illness
  • moving house/school

EMDR has been clinically proven to be a highly effective short-term therapy that helps people to restore emotional well-being.

In September 2017 I will be commencing an MSc in EMDR therapy.
